Lesson Plans: Overview

The Vénus Noire Resource for Readers was crafted with classes across disciplines in mind. While the Lesson Plans overall lend themselves to numerous history courses on Nineteenth-Century Europe, Post-Revolutionary France, Studies of the Atlantic World, the African Diaspora in Europe, and Race & Gender Studies, several of the Lesson Plans offer opportunities for cross-sectioned and interdisciplinary courses.

For instance, "Lesson Plan: Illustrated Depictions of Sarah Baartmann, the Hottentot Venus," offers implementation in Art History and Art Appreciation courses and Race & Gender courses. "Lesson Plan: Literary Analysis of Ourika, by Claire de Duras," can be applied to English or French Literary and Race & Gender courses. Finally, "Lesson Plan: Baudelaire’s Theatrical Duval, in English & French," is ripe for exercise in French-based classes in various disciplines.

As Vénus Noire relies on interdisciplinary analysis throughout its entirety, Mitchell hoped to emphasize those aspirations in this Resource for Readers.
