Note
George B. McClellan served as commander of the Army of the Potomac and
general in chief in 1861 and 1862, until President Abraham Lincoln relieved him
of duty, citing McClellan’s unresponsiveness. In 1864, he ran as the Democratic
presidential nominee against Lincoln and was defeated.
