The map pinpoints about half of the towns, villages, and other locales through which Birchmore traveled.

The text of Around the World on a Bicycle cites more than 350 such locales, plus many specific sites within these locales. To include everything on the map would overwhelm it with detail, lessening its readability. The pinpoints have been chosen to give the reader a sense of the general direction and flow of Birchmore's journey.
